Developing Winning Interview Skills
Students receiving special education services are encouraged to become as independent as possible. The ability to land suitable employment heavily relies upon strong job seeking skills. There are simple steps to take in order to improve the chances of getting through the interview process successfully.

There is nothing better than going to an interview with the self confidence of a well-prepared applicant. Each step of the application process is merely a weeding out process. Competition is very strong for most jobs. The paperwork of an unprepared applicant will end up in file X, which is unfortunately the trash.

The first step to success is a cover letter. The cover letter is your introduction. Most companies request a resume. It is good practice to attach a cover letter every time a resume is submitted. The resume and cover letter should be customized for the particular position sought.

Phone interviews are becoming more popular. This gives the interviewer an opportunity to witness communication skills. This is also used as a weeding process before scheduling face-to-face interviews. Preparation for a phone interview is just as important as a face-to-face interview. A handy resume, along with answered interview questions should be kept close to the phone.

First impressions could mean the difference between getting the job and continuing the job search. Dress should always be conservative. Professional attire should be worn. Jewelry should be limited. Cologne or perfume should not be worn.

It is very important to research the company before the interview. The interviewer usually asks the applicant for questions. At least one question should be prepared. The question should never address salary. Always let the interviewer begin any conversation concerning money or vacations.

First impressions are very important in the interview process. Many positions have been landed by impressing the interviewer for the first time. The cover letter, proper preparation, and research can make a getting through an interview very simple.
